ClubstoHire.com Travel Blog - The Costa del Golf

The Costa del Golf

It’s time for this weeks travel blog in association with ClubstoHire.com, this week’s focus - the Costa del Sol.

“Isn’t it fun to go out on the golf course and lie in the sun.” We’re not sure if this was a Bob Hope tongue-in-cheek reference to score-keeping or the resulting posture of missing that 5 footer for par. Nowadays however with the development of tourist thronged golf resorts – relaxing in the sun and golfing often go hand-in-hand. Few places are better for this than the Costa del Sol.

Attractions of the Costa del Sol

Nicknamed the Costa del Golf – the Costa del Sol is a popular destination for the travelling golfer. However it is also a top-destination for those who have little to no interest in our beautiful game. This is a great family holiday location where you can have a break from the 9-5 and enjoy some Spanish culture. Densely populated by tourists from all around the globe who come for the sun, sea and Sangria.

Whether it be water- or fun-parks, nature reserves or jungle zoo’s, wining and dining at stylish marinas or simply relaxing in the sun, – with over 70 golf courses, golf hotels and resorts along its coastline the Costa del Sol certainly caters for the golfer.

Easily accessible through Malaga airport where you can find a ClubstoHire outlet in the baggage reclaim area of the arrivals hall. With average temperatures over 15° C for eight months of the year, only two months of the year in July and August might prove risky to our pale Irish skin where temperatures soar to high twenties and low thirties. Make sure to bring the factor 50 and a nice Jesper Parnevik/Tappio Pulkkanen style hat if you chose to golf during these months.

Marbella Club Golf Resort

Set amidst the hills of Benahavis, this magnificent Marbella golf course in the heart of the Costa del Sol enjoys spectacular views of Gibraltar, the African Coastline, the Mediterranean and the surrounding mountains. Designed by Dave Thomas who is highly regarded in the world of golf, having played on numerous Ryder Cup teams, his most famous work is associated with the PGA National course and The Belfry.

Calanova Golf Club

Calanova Golf Club located in Mijas Golf Valley, 10 kilometers from Fuengirola and 15 kilometers from Marbella, opened it’s doors in February 2006. The course is an 18-hole, par 72 with 5.866 meters long and has been built according to United States Golf Association (USGA) rules and regulations with regard to the tees, bunkers, drainage and greens.

We can guarantee that players will enjoy this course, where the game strategy plays and important role. It includes, among others, extraordinary landscape views, including Mediterranean Sea and Mijas Mountains, on almost every hole.

La Cala Resort

Finally we look at the La Cala Resort. It is no secret that La Cala is one of the finest golf resorts in Andalucía. Three superb championship courses, each presenting its own unique challenge, slot seamlessly into a natural undulating backdrop of stunningly beautiful trees and flowers, rich with birds and wildlife.

Designed by the renowned Cabell Robinson, each 18-hole course has been created to ensure a testing, yet truly exhilarating experience. The Campo Europa is the most forgiving of the three courses with wide fairways, flatter terrain and larger greens.

The Campo Asia is the most challenging course of the three at La Cala and demand precision from the tee and proper club selection when making your approach as the fairways are tight and greens offer a small target when playing your longer irons.

Campo America at La Cala

The Campo America boasts spectacular views of the Sierra de Ojén and the Mediterranean Sea. Campo America’s wide linked fairways and relatively few bunkers make it a
slightly easier driving course, but don’t let this fool you. The hilly topography of this first class course requires a lot of carry across steep brush-covered side slopes.
